Microsoft now has more than 40 apps on Android

When Linus Torvalds famously said, “If Microsoft ever does applications for Linux it means I’ve won,” there’s a good chance he didn’t imagine the world we live in today. While Microsoft has yet to put any significant focus into the primary channels of Linux, Microsoft has contributed quite a bit to Android. In fact, with more than 40 apps available from Microsoft in the Google Play Store, it’s clear that the company has taken huge steps toward infiltrating the world’s most popular mobile OS.
Long before the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stood on stage and announced a “Cloud First, Mobile First” focus for the future, Google’s Play Store was home to a couple of Microsoft apps. At first, these initiative were either small or purpose-built. Over the last year the number of apps Microsoft has contributed to the Google Play Store has increased dramatically, including the complete Microsoft Office Mobile suite and a new lock screen that focuses on being able to quickly get to your apps and calendar data. The best part about these apps existing on Android is that most of them run very well on almost any modern device, and Android is rapidly reaching a point where Microsoft’s apps could replace Google’s for many users.

It’s not hard to imagine an internal push from Microsoft to make sure their products are the best possible option on all mobile devices, something that Google made quite a bit of money doing over the last couple of years with Chrome and Gmail. Competition is always great for users, especially when it happens out in the open like this instead of contained within walled gardens. Hopefully we see much more of this from Microsoft in 2015.
